Can we do better than a text input?

At Rendering House, we are exploring user interfaces that would make the journey of buying a new home construction an engaging and personalized experience. The journey usually begins with the simple step of identifying the location where you would like to build your dream home. Many websites usually provide a simple text input for a user to type in a location name or zip code.

Since the search for a location covers a geographical region, why not create a user interface that is map-based? Location data is so much more than just text.

A map based input for finding location

The user experience of doing a location search is greatly enhanced when we can display a map that identifies communities where new constructions are available. As the user pans or zooms around the map, the panel displaying the communities dynamically changes to list only communities that are on the map. (Inspiration for this approach comes from here)

Can we do better than a text input element for location based data? Yes.
